You can prepare the tools below for this presentation:

For the painting and fabric printing:

  • Acrylic paint of any colour - use what your kids have in the art cupboard, or purchase something from the local art or craft store
  • Fabric textile medium. I used Mont Marte brand, but you might find Liquitex or Jasart; all are well-known brands
  • Paint brushes of any type that you like - look for soft wide bristles, long handles, and also some small heads for fine detail
  • Stipple or stencil brushes
  • Water bottle sprayer (from a garden centre)
  • Scrap paper for your stencilling
  • Water glass
  • Hair dryer
  • Iron
  • Fabric - I used linen, but you can use any natural fibre that you like.

For the stitching and embroidery:

  • Print out the poppy pattern below onto regular printer paper, or trace it from the
light of your ipad / tablet
  • Threads - I’ve used Sashiko thread, embroidery floss, regular sewing machine
thread in lovely colours, Perle 8 and 12, and any other threads that you might find.
  • Have fun with this - no need to stick to one sort of thread only
  • Needles to match your thread - Sashiko needles (I have a few favourites here),
regular embroidery needles (I love these Clover needles best)
  • Embroidery hoop - any size that suits your most uses. I have 14cm / 5.5", 16cm /
    6", and 19cm / 7.5"
  • Embroidery scissors and regular sewing scissors.

Ellie Beck

Textile Artist and Author

Ellie Beck is a textile artist, writer and photographer living and working from her home studio in the rainforest, Northern NSW, Australia.

She works in an instinctual way; conversations with her materials form the basis of her work. Using natural materials, botanically dyed fabrics, and vintage textiles, Ellie creates improvisational quilts, slow stitched pieces and textile art that speak of her life in nature, slow living and motherhood.
Alongside her craftwork, Ellie is a published author and photographer, as well as a creativity coach working with artists, crafters and small business owners helping them to bring their innate creativity into the world.

She teaches online art, craft and creative coaching courses and workshops, as well as hosts an online Slow Stitching community, where people from all over the world gather to share their hand sewing, embroidery and textile pieces.
